Shop Talk

Whoever said college is only about partying was sorely mistaken. Take, for example, Manne Hollingsworth and Nickie Riley. The two met in the dorms at Florida State University where Hollingsworth studied fashion merchandising and Riley majored in design. Little did they know that their friendship would soon flourish into a business partnership as boutique owners.

Shortly after graduation, the two moved to Manhattan together to pursue their dreams. Hollingsworth went into sales establishing strong networking connections while Riley designed prints for fashion designer Rebecca Taylor. However, the two longed to return to a Florida lifestyle and decided to open a boutique in Tampa as a way for both of them to use their skills in a joint venture.

"We both have family here and the weather is great," Riley says. "Plus, this area has so much potential with its beautiful homes and wonderful restaurants that we couldn¹t pass it up."

Just two short months after finding their dream South Tampa location, the girls opened the doors for business in November 2005. Named after Penelope Tree, the 60s model known as a fashion rebel, Penelope T strives to achieve the same level of fashion authority as its namesake while maintaining a close-knit following.

"We have gotten great support from the community, and word-of-mouth about our store seems to travel fast," Riley says.

Crowning Glory

It may not be as famous as the Kentucky Derby, but the Little Everglades Steeplechase in Dade City is giving the run-for-the-roses a run for its money. The March 11th event offers all the pageantry of a world-class steeplechase along with a variety of infield activities. And nothing tops off the outing (and the outfit) better than a hat, especially if you plan to win the real prize of the day - the title of Best in Show at the popular hat contest.

We turned to Belgian designer Fabienne Delvigne, who specializes in the perfect hat for any occasion, for race day chapeau recommendations: "Big, big, big," advises Delvigne. "Colorful and spectacular."

The creatrice is no stranger to big, big, big public events. She has capped queens, princesses and duchesses from Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, and her sumptuous creations have been seen on countless catwalks and in magazines around the world.

For your own race-day royal entrance, a Fabienne Delvigne original is clearly a triple-crown choice. Fabiennedelvigne.com - Kimberley Lovato
